Beverly´s Inspiring Career Path at JUWI
What is your story?
I'm a civil engineer from Manila. I joined an organization that aligned with my professional aspirations. Since then, I have been integrating civil engineering into the design and construction of solar parks across Southeast Asia and Australia. After five years with JUWI in Manila, I took a leap into a completely new culture and moved to Germany. I've always been fascinated by how things are built and the impact infrastructure has on communities. Civil engineering allows me to combine my love for problem-solving with the ability to make a tangible difference in the world.
As a woman, I first had to carve out my place in the male-dominated world of engineering and construction. Over time, I grew into my role and gained valuable experience over the years. Now, as a senior civil engineer, I take pride in collaborating with diverse teams and greatly value the opportunity to work alongside my colleagues. What keeps me passionate is the opportunity to work on renewable energy projects. These not only challenge me technically but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
Through JUWI I was able to get out of my comfort zone, immerse myself in a new country, take on diverse challenges, and explore thousands of new opportunities.
What advice would you give to young women considering a job in engineering?
In my first job in the renewable energy sector, I was the only female engineer on the project management and construction team. It was a challenging experience, as I had to prove my skills and earn the respect of my colleagues. I overcame these obstacles by consistently delivering high-quality work and demonstrating my capabilities, which helped me grow into my role and gain valuable experience. My advice to young women considering a career in engineering is to believe in your abilities and not be afraid to assert yourself when needed. While the journey may present challenges, grit and confidence in your skills are essential. Surround yourself with supportive colleagues and mentors, and always seek out opportunities for growth and learning. Remember, your unique perspective is valuable, and you can make a significant impact in the field.
How do you feel the Power of Our Unity at JUWI?
When I first arrived in Germany, my colleagues were incredibly supportive, helping me navigate and understand how things work here. They guided me through the little quirks of daily life and were there for me on-site, offering practical help like carpooling between my new home in Mainz and the office in Wörrstadt. They even prepared me for the inevitable bureaucratic hurdles.
As an open-minded young woman who loves traveling, I find professional cooperation with people from all over the world to be a gift. JUWI offers me this opportunity, and I’m truly enthusiastic about the working atmosphere. We communicate directly and at eye level, regardless of hierarchy. This approach, which isn’t common in many other cultures, has been a refreshing and new experience for me. One significant difference I’ve noticed between Southeast Asia and Europe is the work culture. In Germany, there is a strong emphasis on direct communication and flat hierarchies, which I’ve come to appreciate and value.
